FLEXURAL CAPACITY OF STEEL-CONCRETE COMPOSITE BEAMS STRENGTHENED WITH A PRESTRESSED CFRP PLATE

Many studies have confirmed that externally-bonded carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) plate can effectively improve the stiffness and strength of steel-concrete composite beams.Base on the failure mode and the locations of the neutral axis, a close-form solution are developed to calculate the flexural capacity of the strengthened composite beams. Failure may result from rupture of the CFRP plate or crushing of the concrete plate. The analyses show the flexural capacity is not influenced by the permanent load and the prestressing force when failure results from rupture of the CFRP plate, but the flexural capacity reduced with the permanent load and increased with prestressing force when failure results from crushing of concrete. Nonlinear finite element (FE)method was used to calculate the flexural capacity of the strengthened composite beams as well. The effectiveness of adhesive and shear studs was taken into account in the analysis. Finally, experimental results were employed to validate analytical and FE results.
