Simulation Study on the Selection of Logistics Postponement Strategies

Supply chain management has been given so much attention that various technologies and concepts have been applied to improve and optimize supply chain performance. However, failures in supply chain management are still not uncommon in todays industries. One important reason is the failure to sort different demand into categories related to appropriate supply chain postponement strategies. Qualitative analyses on the characteristics of demand and their impacts on supply chain performance have been reported in the literature. Whereas quantitative analysis of matching demand to postponement strategies has so far not been sufficient .This paper is focused on a quantitative analysis to match demand characteristics (demand sources, forecast error and demand frequency) to postponement strategies based on a simulation model. The analytic result shows the postponement is particularly valuable when there are many demand sources, forecast error is high and demand frequency is low.
