Making Supply Chain Management Open and Progressive: The Strategy of Newly Start-up Enterprises
On the contrary of conventional wisdom that few new start-up enterprises are very competitive, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) which was founded in 2000 not only has become the largest semiconductor company in Chinese Mainland and the fourth largest Foundry in the world only for four years from 2000 to 2003, but also has still kept the rapid development since then. Compared with the general viewpoint, the success of SMIC is resulted from the government, this paper addresses that following strategy of supply chain management (SCM) to make its SCM open, progressive and collaborate with strategic partners and gradually build up Comprehensive Supply Chain Network (CSCN) is considered as the key factor to gain the enterprise core competitiveness. The CSCN, including partners of four aspects-product moving channel, capital supply channel, S&T transfer channel, and R&D cooperation channel-is more open, interactive and progressive than traditional SCM. Thanks to importance on newly start-up enterprise in China, the strategy of SCM implemented by SMIC to strategically build up CSCN is particularly useful for study and imitation.
