FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF THE DYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF AN INCORPORATED MASONRY-IN-FRAME SYSTEM

It is a commonly used adding-storey scheme in practice to connect existing brick masonry building with frame structure by short beams at storey level. To get a better understanding of the dynamic behaviors of this structural system, a three-dimension finite element model of a real building was built with the ANSYS program, and modal analysis, response spectrum analysis and elastic time-history analysis were conducted. The results indicate that, the dynamic characteristics and internal force have been redistributed between new and existing building. The dynamic action may be amplified at upper stories due to greater stiffnessalong building height, and the transfer storey may become the weakest part. The analysis results and conceptual design all imply that there exist weak longitudinal stiffness, torsion vibration and abrupt change in stiffness. Considering the reliability of short beam anchoring and seismic force transferring, it is not appropriate for this structural system to be used in seismic regions, if no effective measures are taken.
