FRACTURE ANALYSIS OF BEAM-COLUMN CONNECTIONS BASED ON GENERALIZED STRENGTH MODEL
In order to study fracture mechanism of beam-column connection, conventional joints and haunch joints (repaired with fractured beam flange and enhanced with haunches and ribs of conventional joints) were tested. Test results revealed that the conventional joints and the haunch joints fractured at beam flange and haunch flange near butt weld to columns, respectively. Plastic rotation of the haunch joints exceeded the minimum limit of 0.03 radian suggested by FEMA 350, but those of the conventional joints did not. Numericalsimulation and fracture analysis of beam-column connections were done based on ellipsoidal fracturecriterion of constructional steel. Analysis results revealed that beam/haunch flange near butt weld fractured when the eilipsoidal fracture function reached critical value of constructional steel. The ellipsoidal fracture function could accurately evaluate fracture of beam-column connections.
