SHEAR STRENGTH OF CORRODED REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS
This paper contains three components. First, the shear strengths of uncorroded beams obtained from the experimental investigations on shear resistance of corroded reinforced concrete members were compared with the design strengths predicted using the American, British, Chinese and European specifications as well as model proposed by Greek researcher Zararis. It is shown that the predictions from Zarariss model generally agree with experimental results well. Second, the effects of corroded stirrups on the shear strength of reinforced concrete beams were analyzed based on the experimental results and possible explanations were given. At the same time, the Zarariss model was used to predict the shear strengths of corroded reinforcement beams by taken into account of damage of reinforcement bars and concrete due to corrosion. Generally, the Zarariss model conservatively predicted the shear strengths of corroded beams, except for beams having relative small shear span. Finally, simple design rules for the shear strength of corroded reinforced concrete beams are proposed that will enable the designers to taken into account the effect of corrosion of stirrups.
