MT 3D inversion - a recapitulation of a successful workshop
In the recent years the importance of three-dimensional (3D) modelling of magnetotelluric (MT) data has increased and various 3D forward and inversion codes have become available. These codes use different formulations of the problem (finite differences, finite elements or integral equations), various orientations of the coordinate system and either the plus or the minus sign convention for the time dependence. Nevertheless the resulting impedance values for all these codes should be the same once they are converted to a common sign convention and coordinate system. In the framework of the 2nd annual St. Patricks workshop at the Dublin Institute for Advance Studies, 25 scientists and students (code writers as well as code users) met in Dublin to discuss MT 3D inversion. The main topics of the workshop were to assess the current status of the 3D modelling, to compare the results of the codes and to think about future improvements and new aims in 3D modelling. In advance to the workshop a test model and a test data set retrieved from an unknown model were distributed, so that the results were available for comparison during the workshop. One important outcome of the workshop is the agreement on common input and output formats for all these 3D MT codes. The MT community will also gain access (via MTnet) to the test model and the test data set including the results from various people using different codes that will hopefully converge to a useful code testing facility available to everybody.
