Vertical Numerical Mode-Matching Method of Array Electrical Logging

Array Electrical Logging is a new technology, which has higher resolution and deeper investigation radial range than conventional electrical logs. For probing into responses of array logging, the direct approach is numerical simulation, the popular method is finite element method (FEM). Numerical Mode-Matching (NMM) is a hybrid method of partial analytic and partial numerical, which can reduce dimension of reference frame and has good precision as well as high effect, so it has been applied into forward and inversion of 2-D electrical logging. Due to multi-electrode tools, a vertical NMM method is proposed, which is analytic radically and numeric vertically. Firstly, the VNMM theory is deduced in detail, and then discuss how to deal with electrode series and according to the electromagnetic field continuity, namely boundary transition matrices is derived. Finally, a system of linear equations is constructed according to natural boundary condition, constraint conditions of shield and measured electrodes and initialization conditions of current electrode, and the linear equation and the potential of every point of formation is solved and the apparent resistivity is computed. In some formation model, the new VNMM theory is proved effect and correct, comparing with previous method.
