Estimating Water Demand and Availability for Open Water-based Mill Cooling Systems

Mineral processing is an energy and water intensive activity.Mill comminution equipment usually has high energy requirements which necessitate extensive cooling to remove heat.Cooling requirements are typically 10% to 20% of the comminution energy. If there is an adequate supply of suitable water, open water-based cooling systems are the simplest, cheapest and most energy efficient cooling method available. This paper describes a method to determine the water demand for open water-based cooling systems at a plant and to determine whether the mine has sufficient water to meet that demand.
