Housing for generations:durability of galvanized steel framing for residential buildings
Durability of galvanized steel framing for residential building is a study by the International Lead Zinc Research Organization and the International Zinc Association that measures actual zinc and zinc alloy coating corrosion rates of steel framing samples during seven-year exposure in four different home environments in the USA and Canada. The results show that coating corrosion was minimal from all four sites for all samples. The estimated life expectancy based on single maximum mass loss for plate samples ranged from 258 to 964 years with an average of 574 years at all locations. It is clear that zinc coated steel components of a residential framing system will not be degraded by corrosion during the economic life of a structure.Specifying zinc coated (galvanized)steel framing is in step with todays need for sustainable materials.
