Some typical problems in seismic design of transverse steel frames of single-storey single-span industrial buildings

Focusing on transverse steel frames of single-storey single-span industrial buildings, this study discusses the potential plastic hinge location and some related typical problems including the beam-column bending strength ratio, the ultimate strength design of the beam-column connections and beam splicing joints, and the beam width-thickness ratios in seismic design of the frames. It is pointed out that potential plastic hinge regions are generally located at the top section of the columns and the strong column-weak beam requirement on such frames is not necessary,Consequently, the lower between the plastic bending resistances of the beam and column cross-sections with a connection coefficient can be used for the ultimate strength design of the rigid beam-column connections. In addition, the strength requirement on the beam splicing joints and the width-thickness ratio issue of the roof beam are discussed, with corresponding proposals presented.
