High efficient recovery of zinc and lead from refining dusts by selective chlorination and evaporation reactions

Various kinds of refining dust are generated from ironmaking and steelmaking processes, and these dusts should be recycled efficiently from the view point of environmental protection and utilization of valuable resources.Electric arc furnace (EAF)dusts cannot be directly recycled due to the considerable amount of zinc and lead.Though EAF dusts are treated to recover zinc as crude zinc oxide, some EAF dusts are landfilled without any treatment because of the limited separation efficiency.Development of new EAF dust treatment processes is an important and urgent issue. In the present study, the selective chlorination of zinc and lead from the mixture of Fe2O3-ZnFe2O4-ZnO-PbO was examined and the effect of oxygen and chlorine partial pressures was investigated.High efficiency of selectivity was demonstrated with oxidizing atmosphere.Control of chlorine and oxygen partial pressures affects the reaction rate and the selectivity.
