Durability of sprayed WC-Co coatings in 55%Al-Zn bath
In order to develop protective coatings for sink roils used in continuous hot-dip galvanizing, the sprayed WC/Co cermet coating was formed on a 316 L stainless steel by the high velocity oxygen fuel spraying process, and its durability in the molten 55% Al-Zn bath (863-883 K)has been investigated on the basis of the constitutional change measured by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)and energy disperse spectrum (EDS).The result showed that the durability of WC/Co coatings in molten 55% Al-Zn bath is closely related with the binding phase. The binding phase in the conventionality WC/Co sprayed coating (A-coating)mainly consists of Co phase, and another WC/Co sprayed coating (B-coating)made of the powder prepared by the sintered process mainly consists of η-phases (Co3 W3 C and Co6W6C).The Co phase reacts with molten 55% Al-Zn to form intermetallic compounds,WC and η-phases do not react with molten 55% Al-Zn.Therefore,corrosion rates of the WC/Co coatings in molten 55% Al-Zn are determined by the content of Co phase.
