Nanostructured ceramic coatings deposited by plasma spray
nanostructured ceramic coatings comprised of two phases are becoming increasingly important as they offer the possibility of tailoring the coating microstructure and achieving exciting new roperties. The nanostructured alumina3 mass% titania,zirconia-3 mass% yttria and titania coatings were deposited by plasma spraying. The effect of microstructure of coatings on their mechanical properties was examined. It was found that the surface of nanostructured coatings exhibited regions with nanotexture features original from the semi-molten nanostructured feedstock particles, which resulted in isotropic characteristics of coatings and microstructure with tiny zones of agglomerated nanostructured particles randomly spreading throughout the coating. The nanostructured ceramic coatings having improved wear resistance, thermal shock resistance and biocompatibility were reported.
