A new operating philosophy for more quality in the production process
Operator-friendliness is an essential factor in the economical operation of machines and automated plants.Operation should be ergonomic,ensure fast and safe control of the machine and prevent operating errors to the largest extent possible.Clear and comprehensible functions make it easier to work at the control desks of automated plants.Nowadays,however,many control panels feature a large number of operating elements such as pushbuttons,switches or lamps.Even so,only a few of these elements are relevant for normal plant operation.This is because the operating personnel often need only rely on a few operating elements during the actual production process.For this reason,SMS Demag has developed a completely new,production-oriented operating philosophy,which will ensure a greater degree of quality in the production process.Similar to the operation of office equipment and digital cameras,or of a vehicle with automatic transmission,only those operating elements which are necessary for normal functioning are incorporated into new operator control stations.Such concepts lead to the development of operator control stations that are uniform,clearly structured and thus easy to learn to use.Plant operators benefit from these precise requirements as possible operating errors are able to be minimised in this way.Furthermore,the automated plants can be operated without need for a lengthy and elaborate initial training and familiarization phase.To enable the operating personnel to give priority to the production-oriented aspects,the automation structures must be designed in the correct manner and the new operating philosophy must be implemented according to the following concrete steps:The identification of standard operating procedures (SOPs),the intuitive and ergonomic design of the working environment as well as the Operator Manual (OMA)online help feature.The term SOP represents the typical operating sequences of a plant type or of a concrete plant belonging to a customer.All operating steps are recorded on the basis of HTML and it is therefore possible to design a working environment in the form of HMI masks,control desks,operator s chairs and control rooms.Having been recorded in depth,the operating steps then serve as a basis for the OMA,which provides the operator with a process-sensitive online help feature.This feature accompanies the plant operator during the actual working process and gives instructions as to which function should be executed in which status.The new productionoriented operating philosophy from SMS Demag is in great demand on the market.
