The solidification behavior of CaO-Al2O3 and CaO-Al2O3-MgO slags in dry and wet atmospheres
CaO-Al2O3 and CaO-Al2O3-MgO are common slag coverings and inclusions that are found in calciumaluminum treated, continuously cast steels. However, the effect of cooling conditions and chemistry on the solidification behavior of such calcium aluminate based slag is not well characterized. To better understand this phenomenon, the solidification behavior of calcium aluminate is studied using the double hot thermocouple technique.Calcium aluminate based slag can be significantly undercooled before observable precipitation can be measured and glass formation occurs at high cooling rates. The effect of a humid atmosphere on solidification behavior was to increase the temperature range at which solidification took place and to make glass formation more difficult in slags without MgO;however, the addition of MgO to these slags eliminated any sensitivity in solidification behavior to the presence of a humid atmosphere.
