Manufacturing technologies and properties of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels
The attempt has been made to manufacture high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels by the two following routes. The first, the steels have been made by vacuum induction furnace and electro-slag remelting furnace under nitrogen atmosphere. The sound and compact macrostructure steel with the maximum nitrogen 0.96% can be obtained. The second,a pressurized electro-slag remelting furnace has been developed to manufacture the high nitrogen steels with nitrogen content above 1.0%.The mechanical and pitting corrosion properties of high nitrogen anstenitic stainless steels made by first route have been investigated. With the decreasing of the grain size, the tensile strength, yield strength and HV increase, but the elongation decreases. The steel exhibits high strength and good ductility at room temperature. The high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels investigated show the ductility to brittle transition behavior. The ductility to brittle temperatures (DBTT)decreases with increasing the nitrogen content in steels. The high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels have excellent pitting corrosion resistance compared to 316 L stainless steel. With increasing the nitrogen content in steel, the pitting corrosion resistance is improved. With increasing the NaCI solution concentration and decreasing the PH value of the NaCl solution, the pitting potential of the steel decreases a little.
