Development of new austenitic stainless steels
Four steps in the development of austenitic stainless steels and nickel base alloys are traced. All these steps include a reduction of the nickel content and an increase of the nitrogen content compared to previously existing alloys. It is shown that with the proper selection of alloying elements not only the nickel content can be reduced to economic advantage but at the same time the mechanical properties and the corrosion resistance can be improved. With extreme nitrogen contents, spectacular mechanical properties can be achieved, but processing problems still need to be overcome.
