Chamber electroslag remelting (ChESR)-a new method for enhanced quality ingot production

The DonNTU department of electrometallurgy is proud to announce the continued development of chambered electroslag remelting (ESR).This technology under laboratory testing has shown the potential of increasing the purity of metals and alloys and thereby increasing their improving of performance, this enhancement being critical to the aerospace, automotive, electronics, power generation, and medical device industries.ESR provides an attractive alternative to vacuum processes. In the DonNTU research has focused on a new variant of the technology-ESR in a controlled atmosphere under active metal-containing fluxes (ChESR).These investigations conducted through a series of experimental trials at DonNTU,have shown that application of this technology has the potential for manufacturing high quality ingots from various metals and alloys. These observation can be related to the presence of a chamber and controlled atmosphere which, when combined with an active (calcium,rare-earth)containing flux, creates favorable conditions for effective refining, modification, and alloying of metals and alloys during the remelting process. It has been demonstrated on a laboratory scale that commercial purity titanium ingot having purity levels approaching that of iodide titanium can be produced using this new technology.Indeed small ingots (100 -120 mm dia.)with impurity levels of 0.03% O;0.005% N;0.003% H;0.01% C (mass%)having a hardness less then 100 HB have been produced.Advantage of ChESR produced Ti,other than is higher purity,is its low cost when compared to iodide titanium.Recently it has also been demonstrated at DonNTU that the ChESR process can be used to process superpure steels by permitting simultaneous removal of oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorous. For example, remelting of autensitic stainless steel by ChESR stainless austenitic steel results in the reduction of oxygen content from 0.024% to 0.0020%,nitrogen from 0.081% to 0.0075%,sulfur from 0.008% to 0.002%,and phosphorus from 0.012% to 0.005%.Additionally application of this process results in a 5 fold reduction of both the volume fraction, number and size of non-metallic inclusions.
