Sweet corrosion in oil wells, characterization and remediation

The presence of CO2 environments in O & G reservoirs is well known and one of the most important causes of failures due to corrosion.Sweet corrosion may take place as generalized or localized attack to the internal surface of tubes leading to a failure or an early intervention. When severe generalized corrosion takes place the phenomena of weight loss could happen in a very short period of time.Material selection and uniform microstructure are key aspects to consider. The presence of protective layers, which are produced as a reaction of the fluid with the metal surface, could mitigate the corrosion phenomena. The influence of low alloyed steel composition on the CO2 corrosion performance is reviewed in the present paper.
