L-SAW large-diameter pipe production:Top quality is what counts-Where are the trends leading?What are the benefits of UOE and JCOE(R)technology?
The demand for large-diameter pipes is developing positively,accompanied by sustainable technological and qualitative changes.Particularly in Eastern Europe and Asia,investments are being made in new works for longitudinally welded large-diameter pipes to build up production capacities here for natural gas and crude oil pipeline networks to meet the sharply rising demand for energy.Characteristic for these markets are the increasing quality demands on the pipes and the trend towards higher-strength material grades.To achieve this,new and optimised production and testing methods are being developed and implemented.Technical developments are to be observed along the whole production chain.Of particular note is the rise in the level of automation in the production and testing steps.The aim is to achieve and validate a consistently high level of quality.The hallmark of the large-diameter pipe mill is the forming process,at the same time the main determining factor for the product mix and production capacity.Three processes are generally employed for large-diameter pipes.The UO process,the three-roll bending process,and the JCO(R)process established by SMS Meer.All three processes have been qualified for the production of linepipes in accordance with all the major international specifications.This paper looks at the technical,economic,productive and qualitative differences of these three processes,and gives an outlook towards the future developments.We should start by observing that JCO(R)forming process has established itself worldwide alongside the UO forming process.Directly linked to steelworks and plate rolling mill,the UO variant remains an attractive solution for the processing of large volumes and lot sizes.The JCO(R)process is characterised by comparatively low investment and operating costs,the high flexibility with respect to product mixes and capacities,its potential for high-strength steel grades and particularly heavy-wailed pipes and the achievable product quality.
