High strength and ductility welded pipe and key technologies assuring service security for the 2nd West-East Gas Pipeline Project
The 2nd West-East pipeline is the largest scale X80 gas pipelines with high pressure in the world.This paper reviews the developing history of both pipeline steel and weld pipe for oil/gas transmission,and presents relevant research results of X80 high toughness pipeline and weld pipe with large diameter and heavy wall thickness in China.The emphasis is focus on the key technologies ensuring the essential safety of pipeline.Safety of operation is very important for pipelines.The failure modes of pipeline include fracture,deformation,and surface damage and so on.Long distance propagation of ductile fracture is the most dangerous failure mode for high pressure gas pipeline.For deformation failure,more attention is paid on the local buckling due to seismic activity and geological disaster.Corrosion is a very familiar mode for surface damage.A series of challenges have appeared in the 2nd West-East pipelines where the key questions include fracture control relating to pipeline essential safety (the main issue is arrest fracture control for ductile crack),strain control (prevention of the local buckling on pipeline due to ground movement),corrosion control (relating to strain aging control).Relevant solutions are introduced in this paper.
