Progress of technology in large diameter welded pipes for gas transmission pipelines

Large diameter line pipes have contributed to increase the supply of natural gas to market.Further demand of natural gas is expected in the near future for low carbon society.High strength line pipe is a key component to realize the safe and economical transportation system of natural gas.Large diameter line pipes for high-pressure gas pipelines require state-of-the-art technology from steel making,plate rolling and pipe making.These technologies developed for high quality steel have contributed to the advancement of quality of other steel products.In order to ensure the safety under high operating pressure,large efforts have been made in research and development on crack initiation and arrest control.For sour service line pipes corrosion resistance is required to prevent hydrogen induced cracking.Steel making technology for clean steel has been advanced due to large demand of sour service line pipes.For arctic usage,low temperature toughness requirement has established TMCP in plate rolling.Toughness in heat-affected zone has been improved by the combination of steel compositions and welding control.High strength line pipes of X80 grade have achieved high-pressure operation.X100 and X120 for further increase of operating pressure have been developed and are waiting for commercial application.
