Phenomena, characteristics and mechanism of the reddening of oxide scales formed on hot-rolled steel sheets and strips

In the present paper the characteristics and behavior of the oxide scales formed on hot-rolled steel plates becoming reddish (red-scale)was summarized and the effects of the main manufacturing processes and parameters on this were analyzed.Based on the formation mechanism and the structure of oxide scales developed on carbon steel,it is concluded that the mechanism for the reddening of the whole surface area of oxide scales is different from that of the formation of tiger stripes, and furthermore, formation of the red-scale is related to slab heating temperature (the temperature of reheating furnace),the thickness of the primary scale and the secondary scale, descaling result, finishing rolling temperature and the further oxidation of strips during water cooling,etc.Red-scale defects were often observed on the steels with high Si content, but the high Si content level was not the necessary condition for the red-scale formation. Finally, the controlling measures to mitigate occurrence of the red-scale on hot-rolled steel plates were proposed.
