Towards a new manufacturing technology for high performance rolls
Rolls are costly consumables in metal rolling. One of the key factors that influence the service life of a roll is its wear and fatigue properties. Therefore, improving the wear and fatigue resistance of a roll surface is of significant importance and can lead to considerable savings. This paper proposes to develop a stress-assisted surface modification technology for new generations of rolls that have a better wear and fatigue performance,20%-100% higher compared with the conventional rolls. The surface hardening mechanisms of the technology has been tested and verified on simple flat surfaces in the author s laboratory, including the investigations into the mechanisms of the microstructural changes and residual stresses. The study concludes that the improvement of the wear and fatigue properties is due to the beneficial microstructural changes and residual stresses, and that the stress-assisted surface modification process can be sensible to the manufacturing of high performance rolls.
