X-melt CONARC(R)technology metallurgy with future-oriented flexibility
Price fluctuations in raw-material markets require innovative solutions for the flexible and cost-effective production of steel.Conventional processes depend heavily on the use of specific raw materials.EAF technology relies on scrap with limited hot metal processing capabilities.BOF converters can only operate with a maximum scrap charge of 25%.In contrast,The SMS Demag-developed CONARC process allows an extremely flexible variation of raw materials as it adds features of BOF/AOD oxygen refining process to the conventional electric steelmaking process. Thanks to this innovation, raw materials can be used according to their economic availability fulfilling metallurgical process requirements. The technology can also be adopted to stainless steel applications. At present there arc three CONARC units in operation. This new technology is now booming in India.Over the last two years,SMS Demag has been awarded three projects for a summarized production of 11 Mt of steel per year that are now under execution.
