Innovations for continuous casting of thick slabs

In the very early days,Siemens VAI Metals Technologies casters were designed to produce high quality slabs.Straight mold, short roller pitch and continuous bending and unbending were design characteristics which were adopted by all major caster suppliers. In a next step, caster automation was developed with the focus on handling non-steady-state casting conditions.Together with the development of hot width changing, the flying tundish change procedure and the SEN changer, the sequence length was drastically increased. At this point in time Siemens VAI Metals Technologies had to refocus on the equipment design under the specific aspect of modular design and quick component exchange times. With the introduction of precise and robust hydraulic drive units,an important step in the direction of caster setpoint flexibility was made. This relates to the oscillator, dynamic width and spray width adjustment, and thickness and gap adjustment.Nowadays, increased awareness of health and safety matters has to be taken into account in the design and operation of slab casters. As a direct consequence,Siemens VAI Metals Technologies is developing robot applications that allow for manless casting.Siemens VAI was and is still aware of the ongoing change in its industrial environment. The basic questions we expect to be asked in the future deal with improved maintainability, operability and safety of highly flexible casters. This paper will discuss Siemens VAI Metals Technologies concepts and developments in the face of these challenges.
