Numerical study of pulverized coal injection in a blast furnace

Pulverized coal injection is widely practised in ironmaking blast furnace.High coal burnout is desired to maximize the coal injection rate.A mathematical model is described to simulate the coal combustion in tuyere and raceway region in a blast furnace. The model formulation is validated against the measurements from a pilot-scale combustion test rig with an inclined co-axial lance. The in-furnace phenomena related to coal combustion along the main coal plume is reproduced. The effects of some operational parameters on combustion behaviours are investigated to understand the underlying mechanisms. The results indicate that the coal burnout is sensitive to the changes of these parameters.Linear relationships are found between coal burnout and these parameters. The coal burnout strongly depends on availability of oxygen and particle residence time. The model provides a cost-effective tool for design and optimization of pulverized coal injection operation.
