Modified Particle Swarm Optimization for Active Contour Modelling

The technique of active contour modelling (ACM) plays a significant role in image segmentation. In this paper, we develop a modified particle swarm optimization (MPSO) method, and then present a MPSO based image segmentation algorithm with the idea of ACM. We use some control points on the contour as particles in MPSO. Considering the fact that object boundaries may have different features in different parts, and avoiding intersections in the contour evolution of ACM, we design a novel scheme for the restriction of velocity updates. So the best discovered position for next round velocity update is no more computed by traditional method of PSO. The implementation shows that the proposed MPSO can perform image segmentation greatly.
