Face Recognition Based on NMF in a Residual Image

A novel method of non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) in the residual space is put forward for the representation of face images for face recognition, which is robust to illuminance and pose changes. The residual images are computed by subtracting the reconstructed images from the original face images, and the reconstructed images are obtained by performing independent component analysis (ICA) on original images. Moreover, the independent basic images and the corresponding coefficient matrices are obtained simultaneously. NMF is then applied to the residual images for extracting non-negative subspace and the corresponding coefficient matrices. The two coefficient matrices are combined for face recognition based on the nearest neighbor principle. Finally the simulation experiments illustrate the validity of the method by using the ORL database.
