Characteristic Analysis and Experimental Study on a Bias Magnetic Bridge Type Fault Current Limiter with Current Limiting Inductance

A high temperature superconducting current limiter (HTSCL) with saturated iron core has undesirable voltage loss in the steady-state operation. To reduce the voltage loss in the steady state operation, a bias magnetic bridge type fault current limiter with current limiting inductance is proposed. The operation principles of the bias magnetic bridge type current limit with current limiting inductance are discussed. Control measures to lower steady-state voltage loss and change current limiting ratio are analyzed. A 220V/50A model has been designed and constructed. The model is simulated and experimentally tested. It is shown that the bias magnetic bridge type FCL with current limiting inductance works like a magnetic-controlled switcher controlled by the AC current to regulate the current limit inductance retreat from and insert into the AC circuit, when there is a short circuit fault, the current limiting inductance will be inserted into the fault circuit to limit the fault current. The FCL voltage loss at steady state can be adjusted by the bias current. At the same time, the steady fault current can be easily adjusted depending on the value of the bias current, so as the current limiting ratio.
