Use of Structural Adaption in Parameter Estimation from A Time Series

A structural adaption method is introduced for estimating unknown parameters when the time series of a scalar function of variables from a multivariate nonlinear dynamical system is given. The method employs an adaptive control method including variable transformation. The method is shown to work when the function explicitly depends on a variable with the evolution equation in which the unknown parameter appears explicitly, and the method is shown to work should the previously adaptive control method not work. The method provides a way to extract the unknown parameters out from a time series. Numerical simulations are presented for the Lorenz and the Rosslor systems.
