SPILLOVER AND COMPETITION: EVIDENCE FROM MNCS’ AND DOMESTIC CORPORATIONS’ PATENTING ACTIVITIES IN CHINA
Through Engle-Granger cointegration test and Granger causal test on the SIPO date of 18 multinational auto corporations’ and 13 domestic auto corporations’ patents application data from 1985 to 2005. This paper finds that: (1) the most frequently applied IPC subclasses of domestic companies are similar with those of MNCs.; (2) there is a long-run equilibrium relationship between MNCs’ and domestic corporations’ patents application; (3) the gross domestic application is significantly the cause of MNCs’, but not vice versa; (4) foreign application in IPC-B section is the cause of domestic’s, vice versa. This paper therefore concludes that MNCs are taking patent deployment strategy in China while the positive spillover effect does also exist.
