Analysis of a Questionnaire Survey of Occupants Behaviour in Residential Building Fires in China

This paper presents the results of a survey to quantify the pre-movement time of occupants involved in fires in residential buildings in China. The survey results indicate that most occupants first investigated the fire sources to check that they were real; In the response phase, most respondents attempted to extinguish the fire and warned other people as well as helped others to evacuate. In contrast, the actual movement time for over half of the respondents was under 30 seconds after they had recognized and confirmed the fire. This investigation also shows that most occupants thought that there was a lack of fire facilities in residential buildings in China.
