Digital Microfluidic Medicine-a Platform to Bridge the Microscale to the Nanoscale for Integration of Diagnostics and Therapeutics

Digital microfluidics provides a platform to develop medicine-on-a-chip by custom-designing micro and nano-particles with applications in controlled drug release and targeted therapeutics (gene, protein, and cell), diagnostics, and imaging. The effect of the micro/nano particles on biological samples (tissue or cell) can subsequently be tested to validate their functionalities. Besides synthesis of the particles, it also can serve as the platform for bioassays, biosensors and diagnostics testing. Due to its versatility in function and application, digital microfluidics provides a unique and beneficial platform for biomedicine research and applications. However, it is a technology that requires diversely skilled and multidisciplinary trained workers. This forms unique challenges and opportunities for training to learn the tools, study the science, and being able to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of disciplines.
