Product Design Problem-Solving: An Amalgamation of TRIZ and TOC
Theory Of Constraints (TOC),one of the manufacturing management tools was first applied to production scheduling. But,with evolution it proved effective in other fields. Thus,in design optimization domains,TOC is used to systematically identify one or more core problems in order to give direction to the solving process. On the other hand,TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving),a mechanical engineering tool, uses analogies to help engineers in creative problems solving. This paper combines the strengths of both TRIZ (powerful innovative idea generation) and TOC (focus problem definition) in the intention to provide a generic methodology that guide engineers and designers in their endeavors. Then, the effectiveness of the proposed method is proved by an application on the air bag case study.
