Estimation of bottleneck shiftiness probability with simulation experiments

Effectual bottleneck management is known as the key secret to improve the whole systems throughput in production management,particularly,the bottleneck shiftiness is one of the most important and difficult problems faced by managers. A few researches had mentioned that some production system parameters have something to do with bottleneck shiftiness,but it is hard to say what relationships they exactly have. One primary concept of this study is that analyzing relationships between bottleneck shiftiness and some important production system parameters will help enterprises and managers with their production management in forecasting and controlling the shifting bottlenecks. After selecting five representative parameters,differently with former studies,which are mean job arrival rate,mean processing time at bottlenecks and non- bottlenecks,number of work centers and buffer capacities,five hypotheses between each parameter and the shiftiness measurement β are given and a flow shop production system was designed. Then corresponding,simulation models are established and operated by simulation software QUEST,and data collected from simulation runs are used to build an econometric model. Through linear regression analysis,relationships between each parameter and the bottleneck shiftiness are discussed. A conclusion is given at the end of the paper,which can provide enterprises effectual reference when facing shifting bottleneck problems in production management.
