Influence of Communication on Creative Team Effectiveness: The Mediating Role of Shared Mental Model

A lot of research on the relationship between shared mental model and team effectiveness has been made recently. But there has been little empirical research on the shared mental models of creative teams. Unhindered communication between team members has been thought as the hallmark of high effectiveness team. But extant research hasnt examined the complete set of communication to describe communication between team members. The present study tested the relationship between the four dimensions of communication- frequency,mode,direction and content and shared mental model and art tem creative. Data were collected from 116 fashion design major undergraduates,making up 58 teams in a university in Hangzhou,Zhejiang,China. Two distinct methods were used to measure shared mental model: one was team members perceived similarity of their mental models;the other was intra team consistency on task- specific critical strategies. Results showed that communication mode,direction and content were positively related to shared mental model,shared mental model was positively related to creative teams performance,shared mental model mediated the relationship between the three communication variables and creative teams performance and communication frequency didnt affect shared mental model forming,but impacted positively on creative teams performance directly.
