Three methods in distinguishing the efficient decision making units in data envelopment analysis
Three methods in distinguishing the efficient decision making units (DMUs) in data envelopment analysis (DEA) are presented,illustrated and compared by a case. The result indicates that the ranking results of the efficient DMUs differ from each other. The separate evaluation method and the reference time method maintain the set of assessed DMUs;they differ in the ranking of the efficient DMUs in DEA but consist in the inefficient DMUs. Meanwhile the virtual decision making unit method is different from the other two,and the ranking results vary with the selection of virtual decision making units,this is harmful to decision makers confidence in using the method and implies that the virtual decision making unit method that has been used widely is definitely not the best method to distinguish the efficient DMUs in DEA. Comparatively,the reference time method gives a strong conviction in practice and theory,which has competitive advantages when it used to evaluate a lot of DMUs.
