Application of Controlled Extraction to Geothermal Steam Turbine

Fuji Electric Systems has been providing more than 50 geothermal steam turbine generator units all over the world since 1960. This paper provides the unique mechanism and utility characteristic of 30 MW class single cylinder geothermal steam turbine with controlled extraction for the purpose of effective utilization of triple pressure geothermal resources in Iceland. One uncontrolled extraction turbine with inlet steam pressure 6.5 bar abs. from middle-pressure system and one back pressure turbine with exhaust pressure 1.2 bar abs. to low-pressure system have been operating in this geothermal power plant. The uncontrolled extraction steam is combined with the low-pressure system, too. The new turbine is put into operation with inlet steam pressure 16.0 bar abs. from high-pressure system newly developed and it has two distinguished characteristics to enable combination with the existing units. One is to provide the controlled extraction steam for the middle-pressure system, and the other one is to admit the excessive steam from the low-pressure system. This turbine is the innovative machine that can provide the good advantage not only to generate electricity, but also to make effective use of these triple pressure steam source. The points of development for this turbine are construction of steam turbine, arrangement of main steam piping, countermeasure for erosion of extraction valves and low pressure blades, etc.
