Mathematical Modeling of Medical Waste Incinerator

A small-scale fixed bed medical waste incinerator was built in which temperature and gas species were measured at different locations along the bed height. The medical waste during the combustion in incinerator can be thought as porous medium, and its void fraction of bed is 0.65. Numerical simulations were performed in order to predict the process of combustion and emission using Navier-stokes equations, species transport equations, energy conservation equation, standard k-ε turbulent closure and the joint PDF equations, as well as Lagrangian-Eulerian two-way coupling and discrete transfer radiation model . The result of numerical simulation was shown in the figure of the species of CO, CO2 and O2, velocity and temperature field. The variation of gas components and the temperature of combustion were met with experiments . Meanwhile, the maximum bed temperature was high to 1421K, the minimum concentration of oxygen and the maximum concentration of CO2 is 5.1% and 14% in outlet respectively; which can meet the harmless requirement of medical waste incineration if combustion is full.
