Preliminary Study on Effects of Sewage Sludge Compost on Growth of Several Common Plants

It is long considered that potential toxic matters in sludge may have impact on plants. In this study the negative effects of Chengqiao sewage sludge compost on six common plants and the sensitivity of each plant was determined through seed germination, root elongation and germination index. The result showed that root elongation was more strongly inhibited than seed germination. Seed germination and root elongation had significant negative correlation with the sludge compost extract concentration. The values of relativity index R of potherb mustard, ryegrass and tall fescue were 0.91-0.99 which was quite high in seed germination and root elongation experiments and indicated they were more related with the regression. The inhibition of the root elongation was more significant than that of the seed germination and was more sensitive. We chose significantly-inhibited roots of ryegrass and white turnip to make slice of cross section. The cytoplasm shrank from the wall of cells around the vessels in the fascicular of ryegrass. Destruction of parenchyma cells around the fascicular of the white turnip root partly occurred. Due to lack of water and nutrients, all above would cause inhibition of root elongation.
