Removal of Dissolved Organics in Water by Using UV/H2O2/GAC

This paper studies the removal of dissolved organics in drinking water by using UV/H2O2/GAC , because it needs long reaction time and high H2O2 dosage in UV/H2O2 system on removing micro organic polluted substance in drinking water. By combining with granular activity carbon (GAC) unit, the hydraulic residence time (HRT) could be shortened to 8~15min and the dosage of H2O2 could be cut down to 3mg/L, whereas the removal efficiency of Permanganate, A254 and DOC was improved about 11.8%, 12.2% and 7.5% which was closed to O3/GAC technique comparing to GAC system. Moreover, the removal capability of organic substance by UV/GAC and H2O2/GAC system was approximately equal to it by using GAC system alone. All of these suggested that it was hydroxide freedom radical produced by UV/H2O2 that promoted GAC unit on removing the organic substance. It also indicated that using UV/H2O2/GAC system to produce high quality drinking water was feasible in economy and technology.
