Ionizing Irradiation Induced Decomposition of L(+)-alpha-Phenylglycine Effluents
During the pharmaceutical intermediate production large volumes of aqueous waste with poisonous organic compounds such as L(+)-alpha-Phenylglycine are produced. In this paper, electron beam is used for decomposition and toxicity reduction of this water. Experiments were conducted in the radiation dynamics electron beam accelerator with 1.8 MeV. The results showed that the electron beam technology has high efficiency in destroying organic compounds even in the presence of complex and toxicity effluent. When the electron beam irradiation requires a dose of 1.75kGy, the COD value of effluents from 28380 mg/L reduces to 23040 mg/L. The more effective dose is 8.75 kGy, which represented a reduction of toxicity.
