Adsorption of Cadmium Ions from Aqueous Solutions by Pine Sawdust

The effect of some parameters on the biosorption of cadmium was studied using pine sawdust as the solid adsorbent. Results show that the smaller the size of the adsorbent particles, the higher the percentage of cadmium retrieved, up to 99% for sizes ranging between 0.250 and 0.355 mm. Biosorption was determined to be enhancing at pH approaching 8, decreasing considerably when the acidity in the medium increased. With the temperature increases and the initial Cd2+ concentration decreases, the removal of Cd2+ by pine sawdust increases. As the solid to liquid ratio increases, the percentage of cadmium removed increases. The biosorption process was found to occur rapidly, I.e. the maximum sorption capacity was reached within 30 min. The biosorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics.
