Percolate Treatment in Activated Sludge Ecological Stabilization

Wastewater sludge ecological stabilization (WWSES) was put forward herein for the aim of sludge treatment and disposal. The study was performed over the period from May to November 2006, on a pilot scale bed with 80 m2. The bed was planted with reeds and fed with thickened sludge from Cyclic Activated Sludge Technology (CAST) process (Dry Matter Content 3%). The influent sludge load varied between 0.166 and 1.213 kg TS/m2.d, with average 0.691 kg TS/m2.d. The aim of the study was to evaluate parameters such as COD, NH4-N, NO3-N, TN and TP, in percolate water. Under the loadings of 7 tone, 10 tone and 15 tone thickened sludge per four days, average COD removals are 56.4%, 50.6% and 47.1%, individually; total nitrogen removals are averaged 57% –58% and total phosphorus removals are averaged 82%. Effluent total nitrogen is mainly consisted of nitrate nitrogen. The nitrogen mass balance analysis proved that most of nitrogen was removed by nitrification and denitrification.
