Comparative Study on Oxidation of Two Structurally Different Commercial Reactive Dyestuffs by Microwave Photochemistry

The oxidation of Reactive Red 2 and Reactive Blue19 wastewaters were studied by microwave (MW) irradiation alone, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) alone, microwave electrodeless lamp (MWL) irradiation, MW and H2O2 (MW/ H2O2), a combination of MWL and H2O2 (MWL/H2O2), respectively. The result showed: there exists synergetic function of MWL and H2O2. Considering the color and total organic carbon (TOC) removal, the oxidation ability of different oxidation methods was that: MWL/H2O2>MW/H2O2>MWL>H2O2 alone>MW alone. Monoazo Reactive Red 2 is more degraded than anthraquinone Reactive Blue19 wastewaters. When the dye wastewaters initial concentration is 100 mg/L, treating time was 20 min,the color removal of Reactive Red 2 and Reactive Blue19 was 99.08% and 55.57% by MWL/H2O2, then the TOC removal ratio was only 50.31%and 0, respectively. When treating time was 80 min,the color removal was 100% and 94.61% and TOC removal ratio were up to 58.79% and 51.85%, respectively. MWL/H2O2 has a good prospect for the treatment of dye wastewates.
