Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal Using a Combined A2/O Process and Suspended Carrier Biofilm Process in Pilot Scale

The feasibility of adding suspended carrier into the conventional bioreactor for enhancing biological nutrients removal has been gradually verified in laboratory and pilot scale. A combined Anaerobic/Anoxic/Oxic(A2/O) process and suspended carrier biofilm process(SCBP) in pilot scale was used in this study to enhance phosphorus removal rate. The modified suspended carrier by means of nanotechnology was used and the pilot scale set-up was operated at Yingkow WWTP for 210 days. The effects of C/P ratio and dissolved oxygen (DO) on phosphorus removal were investigated, and their reaction mechanisms were also analyzed. The results show that effluent TP concentrations are within the range of 0.80-0.94mg/L during the first 30d preoperation, and the average TP removal rate is 83%. While during the subsequent 180d operation, the average TP removal rate is 82%, which meet the requirement of GB/T18921-2002. Nitrate is no more used as an electron acceptor by denitrifying phosphorus removal bacteria (DPB) when NO3-N concentration decreases to below 0.20mg/L in this test. The optimal C/P ratio is 60 for this test. Due to the addition of modified suspended carrier by nanotechnology, effluent TP concentration reaches 0.3-0.35mg/L when the DO concentration of aerobic tank is 2.0mg/L.
