Analysis of Carbon Components in Municipal Wastewater with Low Carbon High Nitrogen & Phosphorus

The carbon sources utilised in denitrification process include readily biodegradable COD (SS), slowly biodegradable COD (XS) and endogenous carbon source. The categories and amount of carbon sources played important roles during denitrification processes. The study on sewage of certain wastewater treatment plant in Shanghai indicated that the average specific denitrification rate of SS, XS and endogenous carbon source was 3.10, 0.81 and 0.32 mgN/gMLVSS·h, respectively. Ss accounted for 9.26%-18.5% of total COD and Xs 29.2%-34.6%. The denitrification potential of wastewater was mainly determined by the content of Xs. The denitrified amount of nitrate by Ss, Xs and endogenous substance was around 20%, 50% and 30% respectively.
