Application of Thiobacillus denitrificans in Wastewater Denitrification Treatment Processes

The biological characteristics and suitable growth conditions of Thiobacillus denitrificans were demonstrated. It was concluded that Thiobacillus denitrificans has such advantage as wide ecological amplitude and autotrophic denitrification under anaerobic conditions. Therefore it could be used to remove nitrate from wastewater. The experiment was carried out in Biotrickling filter in which Thiobacillus denitrificans grown. Thiosulfate was electronic donor, and no organic substrate was needed in the nitrogen removal process. The result showed that the nitrate removal efficiency reached over 80 percent after eight days. Biological treatment is quite effective and economical to remove nitrogen from wastewater.
